Using scientific notation in wildcards

Using scientific notation in wildcards

I teach chemistry and am trying to figure out how to make this work...
{mol}*6.02E23

Ultimately I want the students to be able to type their answer in Sci. Not. and it be accepted.  Right now if the wildcard was say 1.2 the answer would be 7.22E23 and Moodle is accepting only 722,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.  I don't want my students to have to do this. Is there a way to fix this?

The same goes for very small numbers too.

Any insight would be helpful.  The last I saw on this topic was in 2009, so I am hoping that someone has a magic answer for me!

Hello Meredith,

I'm assuming you're using the Calculated question. Check the tolerance. If it is set to "0" then the answer is 7.224e23, so 7.22e23 is treated as an incorrect response.

The Calculated question accepts exponential notation, and students can provide their answer in the form 7.224e23.
