How Long Do Deleted Files Hang Around?

A student added a large video file to her post. Last week, the instructor edited the post to remove the video file. However, that video file is still showing up on our report. I cannot, for the life of me, find the file to get rid of it for good.

We are trying to find and remove all large video files from our server. I know that there's a recycle bin, I don't see the file mentioned above there (probably since the post itself still exists). I also seem to remember reading, back when Moodle changed it's file system, that after a file is "disconnected" from a resource or activity and becomes "orphaned" it can take a little while for Moodle to flush it out. I'm wondering how long a little while that is.

Thanks for your input.

I've been informed by a colleague that the only way to remove the file is by removing the object it was attached to. In this case, the post. That led to another interesting discovery: Unenrolling a student doesn't remove his/her forum posts.
