I have been having some issues with a moodle installation, and I am hoping that somebody here can point me in the right direction to get the issues resolved. First some details concerning my installation:
- OS Linux
- Moodle version 3.8.3
- PHP version PHP Myadmin says 7.3.6, but server information says 7.2.30 - this is one of the issues
- Installed via Softaculous / Cpanel (version 88 build 13)
- Apache version 2.4.43
- My SQL version 10.2.32-MariaDB-log-cll-lve
A little history here in that I work at a university, and I am running some e-learning courses using moodle package available via a third party vendor (so I can't control some things such as how to install moodle). I had help from a university tech to set up the account and get the courses up and running, and had backup from him when I needed help, but he has moved on to a different role, so I no longer have his assistance, and most of the techs are pretty busy right now preparing for the fall semester which is now completely online owing to covid.
Just before Christmas last year, I upgraded the moodle using the softaculous installer, and I noted that things looked quite different, and that many of the menus had changed. Most of the documentation that I had written for myself no longer applied, but I slowly worked my way through most of what I needed to do. I noticed at this time that the official documentation for moodle no longer seemed to match what I had installed, but I assumed that it was a case of waiting for the documentation to catch up to the changes. Unfortunately, I find that the documentation still doesn't match -- I can look up how to do something (eg. create cohorts to more easily manage students), but it inevitably points me to something to which I just don't seem to have access. Or the suggestion to switch to boost -- I appear to be running boost, but nothing matches any of the documentation or screenshots that I have seen. I think that there must have been a problem with the install that I did before Christmas, but I just didn't realize it at the time as the interface all seemed so different.
When the new moodle release came out, I thought I would try upgrading to see if this would resolve the issues. I created a full backup of the site, however when I tried to install the moodle upgrade, I got an error message saying " The following errors were found: PHP version is less than the required 7.2.0 Do you wish to enable PHP 7.2.33 ? (Might cause issues with your existing installations)". Yet as per above, I am either running version 7.2.30 or 7.3.6, so I don't know why I am getting this error, and there doesn't appear to be any update being offered that I can install. I assume that it has something to do with whatever went wrong with the last install.
I have been too scared to try upgrading anyway as even though I do have a backup, I am not sure that I could get the site up and running again without help, and I have live courses running.
