Should be possible .... does work when using stock themes that came with 3.5.x. First, copy the link to the course to a text file.
Then edit course description/settings ... click the image, and in the tool bar of the editor select the link tool. Copy the link from the text file into the URL line ... decide on how it opens (new window or ?). Save the settings. Go back to home screen or whatever screen where you see the description of courses .. click the image.
