I don't know about the password/authentication issue itself, but just to say that sometimes actions that take place on the site show as being done by the main site admin. For example, when an item is automatically removed from recycle bin after the given period, it will show that the site admin deleted that item even though the person themselves didn't physically take that action.
This probably explains why the logs show that 'you' are changing the passwords.
