I am using this theme, however, the latex equations look tiny here. Is there any change I can do to the settings to resolve the issue?

Moodle Version: Moodle 3.8.2 (Build: 20200309)

It looks okay on my site (Moodle 3.8.3 (Build: 20200511), Enlightlite 2019120701):

Quiz question with TeX formulas

What filter settings do you have? I'm only using MathJax:

If you provide the LaTeX sequences in the quiz I can test them on my site.

In my cases, the options are:

\**(\frac{1}{\mu^2}\**)

\**(\mu^2\**)

\**(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\**)

\**(\epsilon\**)

Please remove the stars before pasting.

However, everything looks ok in adaptable theme.

Try switching TeX Notation off and see what happens. Possibly something is preventing MathJax from working correctly on your site. If the equations don't display with TeX Notation switched off, check the browser console to see if there are any JavaScript errors for the quiz page.

On my site this looks fine:

Quiz question with TeX formulas

Note that the formulas \**(\frac{1}{\epsilon}\**) and \**(\frac{1}{\mu^2}\**) are actually displayed differently, so I again suggest checking the filter settings. Have you got the TeX Notation filter enabled instead of MathJax? Or both?

Thanks a lot for your kind reply!
I tried toggling Tex, Algebra and Mathjax, on permutation combination. With mathjax on and other two off, there is no change in the previous visibility. However, with mathjax off, I can't see any equation there.
I don't know how to do this, I just opened console and clicked on console. Here it is showing blank!

How to see the javascript error? I am not a technically sound guy!

Can you access the MathJax URL from your settings in your browser (presumably: https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/mathjax/2.7.2/MathJax.js)? You should see JavaScript source starting with:

/*
 *  /MathJax.js
 *
 *  Copyright (c) 2009-2017 The MathJax Consortium
 *
 *  Licensed under the Apache License, Version 2.0 (the "License");

What do you get?

I've tried the TeX notation filter (no MathJax) and the formulas still look okay to me. To recap, Moodle has two ways of converting TeX formulas:

  1. The TeX notation filter: This generates a GIF, PNG or SVG displayed in place of the TeX formula. This requires LaTeX to be installed on the Moodle server.
  2. The MathJax filter: This uses an external JavaScript file to convert the TeX formula into formatted HTML. The browser needs to be able to access the external file, it's on the Internet so normally this is possible unless blocked.

Both can be enabled, the documentation says:

The MathJax and TeX notation filters may be enabled at the same time. TeX notation will normally appear first and be replaced by later MathJax. Using both together may improve the user experience when all mathematics is in display mode.

On my site the formulas look the same with Enlightlite and Adaptable. On your system the formulas look small but only with Enlightlite, but also fractions appear in-line i.e. 1/ϵ whereas on mine they display as formula: inverse-epsilon.

The only difference to the size I could see was with the TeX notation filter's Output image format setting: PNG was best, GIF was slightly poorer resolution and SVG looked smaller, so try changing this.

If you're still having trouble please share the TeX notation filter's settings page (mine is below for reference) and the LaTeX version on the server, I have pdfTeX 3.14159265-2.6-1.40.21 (TeX Live 2020).

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your continuous effort.

I tried changing output image formats but everything looked unchanged.

Embedding all the files you asked for. Please find the mathjax file as an attachment.

P.S.: How to know the Tex version in moodle server?

It looks like the issue is browser-specific, with Chrome I get:

TeX formula in Chrome, TeX is rendered smaller than expected

In Firefox:

TeX formula rendered by MathJax in Firefox, formula size appears as expected

I suggest logging an issue on the theme's bug tracker. I will do some further investigation.

For my case, same issue persists even in my updated version of firefox!

Is it a problem with my device only? Specifically for this theme as adaptable looks fine here.

There might be a bug in the font that Enlightlite uses (Alegreya). I've found an updated version which fixes this problem on Chrome for me.

If you'd like to try this:

  1. Make a backup copy of the theme/enlightlite/fonts/alegreyasans-regular in your Moodle source code directory.
  2. Download the attached zip file and extract the files.
  3. Copy the extracted files over the files in theme/enlightlite/fonts/alegreyasans-regular.
  4. Close your browser and open it again.
Does this fix the problem for you?
