Best procedure to issue a certificate based on a face-to-face final test

Hello,

this is our scenario: to complete the certification, students need to pass several courses and tests. This is more or less managed with badges, course completions, etc. The final activity of the training is a face-to-face exam. Passing the exam is the requirement to get the certificate.

We want to implement digital certificates using the plugin and I've been thinking about the best approach to implement it. Here is what I came up with:

  1. We create a course "Certificate issuing" with manual enrolment only. The course includes an offline assignment and the certificate activity, which is only displayed if the assignment has a grade.
  2. When a trainee passes the exam, the tester enrolls him/her in the course, and manually grades his/her assignment.
  3. The learner then gets an email with the certificate or with a notification that s/he can download it.

Do you have similar scenarios? Do you have different procedures for it? Or better suggestions? Using Moodle 3.9.1.

Thanks for your ideas!

I think that sounds terrific. You might also try an assignment and then grade it as pass fail. What a great way to incorporate face-to-face assessment into Moodle.

Hi Dennis,
Yes, the scale you indicate will make the process more transparent, thanks!

Hi Beatriz,

If the offline assignment is aimed at showing mastery of specific skills or behaviors, you could also set up the Assignment activity in such a manner that:
- there are no submissions possible (no files, no online text)
- the assessment is by marking guide or rubric
- the marking guide or rubric is visible to participants

With a passing grade and access restriction on the certificate, this will only become available to those who have successfully shown they master what's been assessed offline.

This works well for master-apprentice type learning situations.

Thanks! Coolest thing about this approach is that the offline assessor can use the marking guide of rubric on his tablet, to assess on the go... and that a result will be available as soon as the grade has been saved and released... Plus: there's room to add feedback for the student (which, of course, most important).
