Unable to view PDF files using CHROME browser

Unable to view PDF files using CHROME browser

We are using moodle 2.8, and we have many PDFs uploaded to appear in 'EMBED' method for our users.

All this while our PDF files were viewable using the chrome browser, but suddenly now it appears blank, only the first page shows up. This sudden change affects all our existing PDF documents.
I am using chrome ver Version 84.0.4147.105.

However it works on IE & Firefox. Is there some new settings missing here?

I assumed that it's a non-Moodle issue, did a search for a Chrome problem, and found your post in Google Chrome help.

Did you check if the problem persists in Incognito mode? It may be an extensions issue in the regular mode.

yes it also appears on incognito mode.

However if the PDF file has like 30 pages or less, it appears fine on the page. All our PDFs are 60 and above pages.

Since i did not receive any info here i submitted the issue to Chrome.

I'd like to update that I have found the solution.

This incomplete page loading is due to the Fast Web view settings on the PDF documents.

You will need to change the settings for every PDF file before uploading to the Moodle.

On Adobe Acrobat, go to edit-> preferences. Click on Documents on the left, uncheck the ‘Save As optimized for Fast Web View’.

This needs to be set up for every PDF document before uploading to the Moodle site. Then it works.

I have a slightly different solution. Save word file as Adobe pdf /A-1a

Procedure:
Word / Save as Adobe pdf /Options / Create compatible and PDF file /A-1a
The new file is about 30% larger than the original pdf, but it shows Chrome whole, without loss.
PS: Pdf Creator does not help.
