The requested page can't be found error

My problem is: when I type in https://mysite.com/moodle30/ I get a 404 error (Moodle is set to display Home page by default). If I then add index.php at the back of the URL, it works.

Same for the Dashboard link.

But the Calendar, Private Files, and My courses links all works. All that has a built-in *.php file.

I run Moodle 3.9 (a new installation, busy setting up first course).

Environment: Linux web server (Internet provider); MySQL; PHP 7.2

Installed via Softaculous

web servers have an ordered list of default documents which is what they serve when a particular document isn't specified.

Usually this is something like: index.html, index.htm

for moodle you want to add (and prioritise) index.php

The way you set this depends on the web server.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure what you mean by adding (and prioritising) index.php. I will ask my hosting company for help with that.

However, I want to show two other examples (attached graphics). The first occurs when I want to grade an assignment, and the second when I want to access an user record.

I hope this sheds more light on my conundrum.

My course is now basically ready, but I cannot publish when I do not know when a user is going to run into a 404 error.

Not that members of community can't assist ... just that we all probably have jobs ... and, unfortunately, missed your first posting - lots of issues.

Anyhoo ... here's a stab ... your provider should have been able to figure this out for you, BTW ...

In configuration of Apache server there is a config option for defining
default pages to be served when access ends with a /.
Typically that's index.html or default.html depending upon platform.
With a PHP application ... like Moodle ... that default page should be index.php

If I use:
https://yoursite/moodle30/ to access - 404 not found
IF I use
https://yoursite/moodle30/index.php - can see front page.

In either apache config or php config look for a variable for
DirectoryIndex think you'll find it pointed to index.html

Add to that line index.php Apache upon request for a / will look for index.html first if it can't find it then it will look for index.php next ... and you do want both.

Restart your web server.

Hi Ken,

I really rowed with my provider, and they reckon the problem is in the software - they first said:

"The link https://terotechnica.com/moodle30/index.php is loading fine, please check the Moodle site to load with the index.php file as there is no issue with the server or permission.", upon which I answered:

"The thing is: it sometimes loads fine, sometimes not. Try this page: https://terotechnica.com/moodle30/enrol/index.php?id=3 , click on the 'Continue' button at the bottom of the page, click on 'Log in as a guest' and then click on the Home menu at the left."

Their answer:
"We followed the steps as per given and got the file not found error, this needs to be checked with the help of a developer as the site files seems to be missing."

If this does not let a light go up in your mind, I will try to edit the Apache Server files like you suggested. But, I first wanted to pass this by you.

When talking to help desk of a hosting provider that allows/offers/says they can host moodle, you have to be very specific when reporting an issue ... after all they are not a Moodle Partner. However, that being said, imagine your provider offers several AMP stack apps ... the 'P' stands for PHP thus would assume they would know exactly what to do if software required the user to use /index.php to view site rather than just a /.

i'll repeat ... and this is an educated guess ... your server setup (not moodle code) doesn't have index.php as a default page in web services configuration or in it's .htaccess file. Like I said .. educated guess.

Ask them to check DirectoryIndex setting and add index.php to that directive.

Where do you host? Name of provider ...

The topic is called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webserver_directory_index. In the case of the Apache web server it is the http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_dir.html#directoryindex directive. You might want to send these references to your provider.

In the mean time visit > Site administration > Server > PHP info and search for mod_autoindex which is about http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/mod_autoindex.html.
