I've been happily using Moodle 1.9 for about a decade now, and have accumulated a large, very hierarchical question bank. Most of the questions have embedded images.
For various reasons, I need to move to a new server, and so have exported my Moodle 1.9 site, installed Moodle 3.9.1 on the new server, and imported those Moodle 1.9 courses.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the original courses were successfully imported. However, the Question Bank has been problematic. Two issues:
1) Because I teach a few closely related courses, my large question bank was created at the Site level, and the quizzes in each course draw questions from this large question bank. Unfortunately, when Restoring the courses into 3.9.1, the questions are all restored at the Course context. I have been manually moving all the question Categories and Questions back to the Site context. This is a highly labor intensive task! Question: is there a better way to handle this? If not, I can continue with this manual process.
(Related note: since multiple courses often use questions from the same categories, conflicts exist. So I have been renaming any conflicting categories as I move them up to the Site level. Sometime in the future I will figure out how to merge them, but for now I can live with the duplications. Fall semester is approaching quickly...)
2) More serious issue: None of the images in my Moodle 1.9 questions appear in the Moodle 3.9.1 questions. I have read that images are now handled differently than they were back in the 1.9 days. Thankfully, the Moodle 1.9 backup files do contain the images, but it appears that I am going to need to manually upload and insert all these images back into the Moodle 3.9.1 questions. Question: is there a better way to do this? Again, I can do it manually, but it's probably gonna take me an agonizing couple of weeks!
Any insights from the expert Moodler's here would be greatly appreciated!
