Apostrophes / Contractions

Apostrophes / Contractions

Good morning,

Moodle 3.7

I need to know what's wrong in the following syntax for CLOZE questions:

Maria {:SA:=isn't ~=isn´t ~= is not} studying hard enough.

For some reason I can't figure out, whatever apostrophe students use Moodle will not take it as correct.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Cecilia,
I've tried the syntax you indicate and for me, the first input (with ') works:

The second doesn't. My only explanation for this is that it has to do with how the character is entered, it might not be accepted when typed from the keyboard but only entered as a special character, which is not possible to do in this type of questions. In the Short answer question type, both options were accepted.

I'm not an expert in English grammar at all, but my corrector suggested to change "isn´t" to "isn't". Maybe it is a good thing that this is not accepted because it's not the usual form to type it.

Hi Beatriz,

Yes, in fact rthe only reason why I included isn´t as a correct answer it because some students use that instead of the real apostrophe isn't. But there were a few cases when moodle didn't take any of those two, and I panicked. Thanks a lot!

Bon dia Cecília,

A mi, sembla més que un accent espanyol més que un apòstrof. No sempre està clar quin és el que hi ha als teclats espanyols i he vist que alguns estudiants posaven accents en lloc d’apòstrofes habitualment.

Espero que això us ajudi.

Matt

Thanks Matt, I'm pretty sure that is one of the problems, that Moodle won't accept an /´/ as an apostrophe. I'll probably have to teach that to students!

I wish! I lived in Catalunya for 7 years so I can understand Catalan OK but, to my disgrace, I didn't learn enough to speak it, only enough to proof-read & edit Google Translate.

In my defence, almost everyone I knew there, even Catalanes preferred to speak Castellano in social groups. I think they mostly wanted to make outsiders, like me, feel welcome. What's that uniquely Catalan word for being open to & welcoming outsiders & cultivating a shared sense of belonging? I can't quite remember.

Anyway, I'm joining the "Brexodus" & moving back to Spain in September. This time, I'll have to commit to learning to actually speak Catalan smile
