Can anyone tell me about or tell me how I can find out about copyright laws when adding a picture from another website (like a map) or adding the link to the map in the resource module?

Thanks

John

Greetings, John!

In the US, there are tons of website that explain all these things.  You can google "fair use" and teachers to come up with quite a few.

In general, teachers are allowed to use limited amounts of copyrighted works (there are published limitations for all kinds of things), but the guidelines are pretty vague when it comes to websites.  They are much more clear for books, music, movies, and things like that.

You are protected to some degree if you have limited accessibility for your materials.  That means they are in Moodle, and students cannot see/use them without logging in.

You are also expected to secure permission if you intend to use the materials for more than 2 years.

In general, you can follow citations rules (just as you would when you write a paper) for attribution.

See if some of these links help you:

Disclaimer--only for U.S.A., and some of these things are eroding quickly with the advent of Digital Rights Management software.

Really pleased with the moodle 2 addition of a range of CC licences to be applied to upladed work. However, when I share a course with other teachers or move on and leave my resources for others, it doesn't seem clear who has licenced the work. Is it possible to increase the visibility of the licence to other users?

I think if another teacher in your course chooses your file to use, then the default Copyright setting is the one that you gave it - so that is how they would know as they were choosing it to add to their area. I think that's how it works anyway....
