I just got a new hosting and it has moodle 2.6 I wanted to upgrade but don't know where the newer versions are can someone assist, please

What do you mean it "has" Moodle 2.6? Was Moodle pre-installed or is there some sort of "application installer" for Moodle that only includes 2.6? Or something else?
We *strongly* recommend that you download Moodle from here and install Moodle yourself. Then you know what you did, you can use/upgrade to the latest versions and it's much easier to help you if you have problems.

Ok - you're going to have to give us a bit more background/information if you want us to help you. Did you mean you bought hosting (from who?) with preinstalled Moodle? And that was 2.6?

I ma upgrading to 2.7.2 because it is required before going to 3.2 to 3.8.

I don't understand. Since your hosting account is new, why not tell your hosting company that you want them to install the latest Moodle 3.8.2 version. Why are you messing around with 2.6, which was released over 7 years ago. If your hosting company says they can't, drop them and find another company. (This is almost like going to buy a new car, and they sell you a Model-T Ford, and expect you to upgrade it.)

The error you have is probably a permissions issue in your 'moodledata' folder. Two things...
1. completely delete the directories 'cache' and 'muc' in your moodledata folder
2. check the permissions - make sure that the web server user can write to this directory

ok thank you they do have available 7.1 so I will have them put it on the server or update the php.

I could be wrong, but as I recall, Moodle 2.6 does not work with php 7, but Howard might remember.

You can accept their default, then spend a lot of time on your own upgrading it, if it is even possible. Or, you can ask for the latest version of Moodle.
Either way, upgrading a moodle is a good thing to learn. You will need these skills. The problem with Moodle 2.6 is that in order to upgrade it, you have to make several steps along the way.
I fear that you might have a "hosted" server, which does not support more current versions of Moodle.
