Migrating my Moodle onto a new one on MoodleCloud

Hi,

I am posting this question (again). I have a course on a Moodle with OpenEdu. But my school might put a stop on it because I am the only teacher who uses it. And I will like to have my own Moodle and I am willing to pay the fee to have a Moodle for 100 users.

But I have to major problems.

First on OpenEdu I had the h5p plugin which I use to create all my activities for my courses. I understand that I would be able to migrate my Moodle with the activities on the Moodle 3.9. This means that I have to wait to create my Moodle on 3.9? If so, when will the 3.9 version be available?

My second question concerns the backup. I made a backup in order to migrate my Moodle on the next one. Then I press 'download'. But when the 'download' is done, I get a message saying that I don't have a programme to use .MBZ content. This means that I cannot have a copy of my backup on my laptop or on a usb stick. I have tried on my Mac and on a Window computer. And if I look on MAC store of Window store I cannot find anything. At last I found a 'File Viewer' and could put my backup on it. But it has to many files that I don't think that this File Viewer is doing his job.

To resume my two questions:

when will be the 3.9 version available?

how can I download a .MBZ content in order to download my Moodle on a usb-stick of my computer.

1. So I am presuming that you are going to use MoodleCloud? To have gradeable H5P activities you will need to wait. However, I am presuming that you have used the H5P plugin to create your activities on Moodle? This will not be the same plugin in 3.9 so your course is still going to be missing those activities. I would suggest that you download your H5P activities separately so that you do not lose them. Then you will be able to add them to the current version of Moodle on MoodleCloud - they will just not be gradeable.
2. The only reason you would need a program for an .mbz file is to open it. You do not need a program just to have the file on your computer. If you want to see what is in the backup file, you should be able to change the extension to .zip and unzip it.

Moodle 3.9 is still in development and no provider of moodle should be offering to customers.

A .mbz file is an archive ... a course backup. mbz stands for 'moodle backup zip' but it's not really a zip as you might be accustomed to. While you can un-archive it easily with a Mac, what it un-archives can only be used with a Moodle. You will not find any humanly recognizable file by name that you uploaded to that course ... ie, if you uploaded a 'mygreatvideo.mp4' you will not see that file name in the un-archived .mbz file.

Hi

You wish to "downgrade" a Moodle hosting from a Moodle Partner to Moodle Cloud? They are the same network of providers. Will help you with the migration. The path you've already started, through https://docs.moodle.org/en/Course_backup and subsequent https://docs.moodle.org/en/Course_restore is also OK, if you have only a handful of courses. A full https://docs.moodle.org/en/Moodle_migration is one step, but technically more demanding.

Moodle 3.9 stable is announced for 15 June. Might not be useful to you, if you are on Moodle Cloud. They decide on the date of upgrade. Generally pretty early. You can connect with their supporting team in the forum dedicated to Moodle Cloud https://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?id=8277. Or, the moderators might kindly move this discussion to that forum.

Thank you everybody for your help. I put my question on moodle.org forum as Visvanath Ratnaweera suggested me. Thanks. The reason I want to wait for the 3.9 version to come out is that someone told me that I would be able to activate something on that version that would allow me to import my H5P activities in one go and then desactivating it. I have created so many exercices on h5P - I almost have the French grammar on it...! So you understand that I hope to be able to move these in one go...! Elisa

Saw your enquiry H5P Plugin in the MoodleCloud. Yes, the connectivity between Moodle and H5P is going through a big transition through the releases 3.8 and 3.9. I don't know much details on this, hopefully knowledgable people will join the discussion on the other forum.

Generally, the Moodle developers don't just discontinue an interface to another system just like that, they'll provide a comfortable migration path and will give you plenty of time. Important thing from your side is, no haste, not under pressure, means don't burn the bridges! ;)
