Do not use this button.
After the new activities are added. Navigate to the other tab Bulk edit activity completion.
Select the new activities and then the Edit button.

Look at the Course> Activity completion report - the old activities have retained their status - the new activities are displayed as incomplete.

Yes. But is it possible to perhaps show the new activities in the course completion?

Using the Bulk Edit Activity completion - is linked to the Completion Report. The activities that were completed will retain their completion status. The new activity will be displayed as incomplete - therefore the course is no longer complete. The outstanding activities need to be completed before the student will achieve course completion.
