First, thank you very much for taking time and effort to help me. Sorry, that I did send materials so badly. I try to do it otherwise.
My Moodle version is 3.8 From the word-select I don't know, but I installed it 3 weeks ago, so it should be quite recently.
The exercise we are talking about is in https://hennyjellema.nl/moodle/ in a course for which everybody can enroll him or her herself. The name and the path of the course is in the screenshot. And I have made an html page with bigger pictures to show the problem:
Met vriendelijke groet,
P.s. The whole idea of the exercise is that a second language learner listens to a text spoken at natural speed. He also reads the text, but there are too many words in that text. He must select the words he DOES NOT hear.
The educational background of this exercise is that students get used to the natural speed of a native speaker.
Yes I "found" you. Thank you for taking that effort.
I made you creating teacher and administrator. And I really hope you find the problem.
The exercises we are talking about are in Luiteren&Lezen. ( = Listening and Reading) and particular in the section of Steensoep. ( A funny story about a poor bum and a miserly woman. He tells her he can make soup from a stone.)
You inserted audio files in the text of your Word select Question Text.
I have tried to do this and it crashes the expected behaviour of Word select. I am not getting the same unexpected behaviour as displayed on your screen shots, but what I get is that the words of any text other than the first line are ignored when clicked.
Hope Marcus will find a fix for that bug.
Below are : 1.- question edit mode / 2.- student checks some correct & some incorrect words / 3.- Display upon checking answer : only first line taken into account!
The question type ships with some example questions including one with some embedded audio in xml format. They are stored under
I have tried this and it works, I then tried creating a new one with Audio recorded from the Atto recording button which I have never done before and was rather pleased to see it worked as well.
However I then created one that is similar to the examples given in this thread with multiple audio items embedded and the ability to select words does not work as expected. In my test it allowed the selection but when I pressed check it didn't recognise anything was selected and I got the error message
So it will work with audio if the text comes before it, but it needs fixing so it doesn't matter where the audio is. I will look into it further as soon as I can.
On a related note I was also working recently on a much easier way of importing the sample questions as normal people are unlikely to navigate the import/choose a format/find the files process and I had some code that simply added a link into the question editing interface that said
But I got distracted by other stuff... Shout out if you think that such a link is something I should get back to once I have addressed this audio/multimedia issue.
I confirm your findings. This bug has gone unnoticed so far because nobody had inserted more than a single audio file in a WordSelect question text before!
Yes, and I feel like I should have tried that myself as it seems like exactly what people would want to do.
I find it very frustrating when my code is found to have bugs, but at the same time it is a delight to find people are using it in varied and different ways.
I have a strong suspicion that the problem is caused as a side effect of the multimedia filter. Henny and Joseph, could you do me a favour and experimentally switch off the multimedia filter for a course and see if the problem goes away.
And for anyone confident in installing code from github the latest master branch here
Contains a tweak that may allow it to work with the multimedia filter on.
- Current version of WordSelect 2020021500
- Filter: Multimedia plugins ON -> buggy display as reported previously
- Filter: Multimedia plugins OFF -> display OK, see attached screenshot
- Latest version on your github master branch
- Filter: Multimedia plugins ON -> display OK see screenshot
- Filter: Multimedia plugins OFF -> display OK, same display as case 1.2
When Filter: Multimedia plugins is ON or OFF, the display looks different, it seems that a different audio plugin is used!
First of all, I'm very happy that there are people in the world who take the time, interest and the patient to look after my problem with Word-select.
I'm going to try to do that what you are asking about that filter in my Moodle. I hope I do found it.
Here: https://github.com/marcusgreen/moodle-qtype_wordselect I didn't succeed to register. I had to turn horses, monkeys and more ..... But it seemed that I couldn't get them quite good on their feet.
I understand from you two, that I am the first one who wants to have more soundfiles as one in one exercise? And that is the cause of my problems? Tja, .... I really need that kind of exercise, for learning a language, sound is essential, since language is a sound matter in the first place, isn't it?
So I really hope you find a good solution. In the meantime I 'll experiment with that filter thing.
It is through feedback from people like yourself that I get to improve my plugins. Having multiple sound files is an excellent idea, as there is more to language than the written word. Let me know how you get on with the filter thing. The UK Open university use the question type so I will be checking with them about the proposed fix.
Where are my courses? (screenshot)
I don't think they disappeared, but normally it is the first thing what I see as soon as I start the thing.
I can find them via site adminstration or so. Since you add that demonstration course, I only see "My courses". That's not what I prefer.
Is there a way to get back to all the courses?
How I'm I going to solve the problem with the sound in word-select?
Marcus, you really try to help me, I'm sure of that. But it seems that it is still not possible to put more then let we say 8, soundfiles in one text and having the word-select working properly.
Or did I miss a message?
that I set up and it shows a Wordselect question with two items of audio that play back. Until I release a new version of the question type the solution to having more than one item of audio is to turn off the multimedia filter on the course.
It works PERFECT!! Thank you so very much.
You deserve tulips from A'dam!
I'm still very happy with word-select and (if you have the time) you can see that I did put my whole steensoep-story very succesfully in the Moodle.
But (some) of my students do complain that they don't know how many words they have to go for. They say, we have no idea when we have them all or have many wrong ones, before we click on finished. I did the settings so that they have more attempts. And in the instructions, I write manually how many words they have to seek. That helps.
They ask why they cannot have it with what they call "the other system"
I tell them not to behave as spoiled brats, and that we need the results to be saved.
That does it more or less.
So the matter is certainly not urgent, but if there is a moment that you have nothing else to do (!!) and start thinking about making word-select more perfect.... well think of this message.
Its where developers store their code. It allows them to keep control of different versions and create branches for developing stuff. The issues links can be useful to see if other people are experiencing problems that you are having and sometimes (like in the example I gave), if developers are planning things.
