Thanks again for your help. It seems to me that something odd is happening within the course_overview block...but I'm not sure if that assumption is correct or not. Now that I have deleted that block everything works and the errors in the log are no longer being created. I'm flooded with other work at the moment so I'm going to have to resist the urge to investigate further. Last night I noticed, ironically, that you are actually the one who maintains the course_overview block.
I wonder if my upgrading to 3.7.2+ last fall had anything to do with this issue. I suspect it has been around for a while now but I only noticed it yesterday because I suddenly have more than a small handful of teachers using the course. At any rate, thanks again.
