Create only alpha / numerical usernames (Prevent symbols)

I would like to prevent my site users creating usernames with symbols _ - @

which are allowed as default under Home / Site Admin / Security / Site Security settings

Is there a way to do this? I can see the option to extend the use of symbols but I would like to remove the allowed symbols all together.
