Maximum grade & Total of marks?

Maximum grade & Total of marks?

Hi, dear Moodlers!

Does anyone know, how Moodle calculates points when "Maximum grade" differs from "Total on marks"?

This is the case:

  • "Maximum grade" is always 5.
  • Every essays' points are 5 per question.
  • "Total of marks" depends on how many essays the quiz includes, of course. For example, if there are three essays, "Total of marks" is 15. If there are four essays (see the screenshot below), "Total of marks" is 20, etc.

How Moodle calculates the total grade (shown in the Grader report) in this case? Is it the mean? If not, how the grade is calculated by Moodle?

In effect, it should divide by three to get from 15 to 5 but actual formula would be a little more complicated - probably something akin to Total points earned divided by total of marks times maximum grade
