Project Description Requirements Overview
This project creates learner-built dictionaries along with flash-card quizzing activities of the words and phrases learned in a foreign language training program. Learners select their own items to be reinforced/relearned from resource lists created by instructors. By integrating the tool into a course management system (CMS), teachers can monitor the progress of students and thus give timely recommendations and resources as they proceed in their projects. There are four major sections to this project.
1. Teacher Interface and Database: for providing phrase and word lists
2. Student Dictionary Interface and Database: for collecting/searching words/phrases
3. Student Flash Card Study Tool: for quizzing, reflecting on, or commenting on the lists.
4. Learner Tracking and CMS Integration: for reporting on and assessment of learner participation
In the process of student involvement in group collaboration, little attention has been paid to how learners collect and practise new language (words and phrases). Task-based theories of language learning (Nunan, Ellis, etc.) argue that learners will retain new words if used in the context of a real-world project. These words are thus selected by the students as needed as a project progresses. Teachers do not pre-select language items, but can provide useful resources that students might search through. Putting such resources (project-related word and phrase lists) online is a convenient and easy-to-modify approach. This project is intended to create such learner-created dictionaries along with a capability for self-quizzing of the items in a flash card study aid. By integrating the tool into a course management system (CMS), teachers can monitor the progress of students and thus give timely recommendations and resources as they proceed in their projects.
