Hi Michael:

Just a quick FYI, from what I know, that 60 simulatneous chatters happened when one of our instructors decided to invite a remote guest speaker for a Q & A session using Moodle chat module.. and that really stressed our server. Certainly it's not like having 60 students to chat with each other at the same time - that would be chaotic! I think this could happen to other online courses too so we are looking into some possible solutions right now. Will keep everyone posted.

Mark, I don't know if there is a new chat module in the offering but you might want to look at phpopen chat (http://phpopenchat.org), the NEW project (http://netlab.gmu.edu/NEW), or Jabber servers (http://www.jabber.org) as an external tool that can be linked to your moodle site. We are currently doing some testing for these solutions. If you could also help with the testing, that would be great! Thanks!

By the way, the COVCELL (http://www.covcell.org/) is developing a virtual classroom tool that could be integrated with Moodle in the future but it probably won't be available until next year... just a quick FYI..
