Admin Q: Hiding or Deleting "Optional" Profile Fields

Moodle 3.8

Is there a way to hide, delete, or customize the fields in the Optional Profile category? Most of the items there are not relevant to our students (ICQ, AIM, etc) and I'd like to replace them with more current options (Facebook, Instagram, SnapChat, etc). I am wondering if there is a way to do this without editing the code so that it doesn't get messed up on the next version update.

Hi Debby,
If a field is not being used by any user's profile, you can customize the field via Language customization and rename them to anything you want. Just be aware that if you use multiple language packs, you will need to make the customization in each language pack. Doing them this way will keep your change applied, even when you upgrade your Moodle to a new version, because the change is in your Moodle database.

That worked perfectly. Thank you! One last question -- is there a way to hide some of those fields from the user that we won't need to use?
