I have seens ome discussion about there being a shared folder resource, but have not been able to find a clean solution. What I would like to be able to do, is have a folder of files which can be accessed by several courses, so the files only need to be uploaded once.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

I've had the same problem. I have over 4G of resources and didn't want to break them up into individual course files, so I created one folder RESOURSES outside the moodle root and outside the moodledata, after which I created a symbolic link to the course folders. I have been doing this manually, but has also start to write a simple script that will allow this process to take place automatically.
