Hi Amaia and Helen,

I'm currently having the issue in Moodle 3.10.0

It's happening in several - actually I think all - of the anayltics models emails that had been turned on. Those were "Students at risk", "students who have not accessed the course recently", and mostly importantly for us "Upcoming activities due" since that one goes to students.

We don't have any template/message customization but we moved. our Moodle hosting this Fall to Azure. Is there something in the way our Moodle is hosted in the cloud that is causing these broken location links?

in your site's config.php - how is $CFG->wwwroot set?

does it look something like this?
$CFG->wwwroot = 'https://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . '/mysite';

If so - that is incorrect and it should be set with the actual url of your site - eg moodle.org would look like this:
$CFG->wwwroot = 'https://moodle.org';

Hi Dan,

The config.php did look exactly like that. I updated the $CFG->www root for both https and http to equal our domain. But after uploading that the site wasn't accessible. I had to revert back to my saved config file :/. Did I do something incorrect in my typing?

if (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && $_SERVER['HTTPS'] == 'on') {

$CFG->wwwroot = 'https://edu.theiwrc.org;

} else {

$CFG->wwwroot = 'http://edu.theiwrc.org;

}

PHP syntax error ! Missing ' after the url.

if (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && $_SERVER['HTTPS'] == 'on') {

$CFG->wwwroot = 'https://edu.theiwrc.org';

} else {

$CFG->wwwroot = 'http://edu.theiwrc.org';

}

Is the full excerpt from config.php:

if (empty($_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'])) {
    $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] = '127.0.0.1:80';
}

if (isset($_SERVER['HTTPS']) && $_SERVER['HTTPS'] == 'on') {
    $CFG->wwwroot   = 'https://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
} else {
    $CFG->wwwroot   = 'http://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
}

In which case the site would work as expected using a web browser but when scheduled tasks get run $CFG->wwwroot is 'http://127.0.0.1:80' because $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] is not set when the cron runs.

The docs say $CFG->wwwroot:

… must be a fixed URL (a string constant) that points to your site. Do not try to set this with any PHP code that can generate a variable URL. This is not supported, can cause strange problems and will stop command line scripts working completely.

So there should be just a single line replacing the lines above:

$CFG->wwwroot   = 'http://edu.theiwrc.org';

and no if {…} else {…}.

I'm using this bitnami docker image, which uses that same code in config.php, and it works well in most cases. This particular problem can be fixed by setting environment variables (HTTP_HOST, HTTPS) before running cron jobs, but I don't know how would this affect other parts of the code.

Does anybody knows why the docs recommends not to use variables? which CLI scripts will be affected? Any additional information is appreciated.
