Quiz error: Cannot get the specified dataset for a dataset dependent question! (question: 410217, datasetitem: )

Hoping to get an idea what is wrong.

I have a quiz with 20 questions, each work perfectly okay when previewing on their own. All wildcards appear okay, private datasets all 30 in length.

Now the quiz tends not to run and an error message similar to below occurs:

Cannot get the specified dataset for a dataset dependent question! (question: 410217, datasetitem: )

sometimes the error message does not happen ...

What does the error message mean?

Any help/guidance much appreciated.
