user pics major problem

Please help me solve this issue. When user tries to update their user picture on a moodle application 1.1 using a hosted site using specs

Linux
2.4.20-24.7 kernal version
1.3.29 (Unix) Apache version
4.3.3  php version
GD 2.x is installed

Only a black box appears instead of their .jpg they have uploaded. I'm desperate for an answer.

If you are trying to upload .gif, but your server only allows here to upload and convert .jpg and .png, then you get first some errorlines and you end-up withblack pictures.

I have a similar problem with uploading a user pic.

If I attempt to upload a .jpg picture I get an error that says "JPEG not supported on this server"

So now I try a .gif. When I hit return the screen redraws and the address changes to /moogle/user/edit.php. All that is displayed is a white background. 

No picture is uploaded.

Any Ideas on how I can fix this?
