Captivate 2019 HTML 5 lesson fails to launch in moodle 3.7

Captivate 2019 HTML 5 lesson fails to launch in moodle 3.7

Using moodle version 3.7.2 (Build:20190909) and launching an activity that was created in Captivate results only in a spinning circle. After several minutes, a click on the TOC Title may or may not open the lesson. Until the TOC title is clicked the spinning circle persists for hours. This occurs with only a single user logged in on a shared hosting site with only moodle installed.

Any hints about where to focus to resolve this video activity performance problem on a server with shared hosting? I  read moodle documents on Debugging, Performance and searched for forum entries about "HTML 5" SCORM activity, but did not discover a solution.

Details

  • The same Captivate projects launch without delay on https://skillspro.moodlecloud.com. (This makes me think I have a problem with configuration on the moodle test site.)
  • The moodle test site is https://training.cciv2.com
    • The attachment shows the SCORM activity footer with Performance info enabled.
    • Host is In Motion on a shared server with Basic Plan resources.
    • Server Information: Apache Version 2.4.41, PHP Version 7.2.19, MySQL Version 10.2.25-MariaDB-log
    • Moodle was installed using Softaculus script
    • Moodle theme: Classic
    • System Benchmark Score: 278. Login time performance for guest and fake user account are only areas above critical limit at 0.921 and 0.934.
    • This test site hosts only moodle with only one admin and one student account.
    • Same symptoms with a moodle production site using a shared server on Webhosting Hub with Dynamo Plan, which has considerably more resources than the test site. System Benchmark Score for this site is 213 with no areas above critical limit.
    • Same results whether the Captivate zip file is uploaded to a IMSPC or SCORM activity.
  • https://cloud.scorm.com, reports zero errors and the SCORM package and launches without delay
  • Captivate Details
    • 2019 V11.5.1.499 test project is
    • Published as HTML5 (not flash) and SCORM 1.2.
    • Zip file size is 1.3 mb (Locally expanded folder size is 3.1 mb.)
    • Test projects are a single slide with only a text caption. No audio, video or other assets.
    • Same symptoms with non-responsive and responsive Captivate projects.
  • Media player plugin settings are the same on  https://skillspro.moodlecloud.com and test site.
  • Same symptoms with other browsers: Edge, Internet Explorer, Firefox.

Moving to General help...

I would start by opening my web browser's Javascript console and checking for errors.

Howard,

Thanks for the hint about javascript and for moving my post to a more appropriate forum.

The Javascript console shows no errors when the spinning circle is visible and no errors when the course eventually loads.

Resolved by reinstalling moodle 3.7.2+ (Build: 20191016) from scratch. Now the SCORM activity loads promptly, even when the Captivate project contains audio and many slides.

Interestingly on this site the moodle installer could not open a newly created MySQL Version 10.2.25-MariaDB. But the same settings (host, database name, user, password) worked with a PostgreSQL database. As for why, I haven't a clue. Anybody?

I suspect my original misstep was using Softaculous 5.2.1 for the original moodle install. Perhaps the Softaculous script for moodle 3.7.2 blew past the MariaDB issue on this hosting site. In the end the only issue was failure to launch the SCORM and ISM activities, which made me think it was a performance issue instead of a read the documentation issue.

Hi Philip,
"I suspect my original misstep was using Softaculous 5.2.1 for the original moodle install" - Take a look at this message:

Thanks for the links.

I am now a believer and can testify that installing moodle the hard way is way easier than the Softaculous siren song of one click staging.
