I too got irritated by the 'fashion' which tempted me calling myself "an old, unfashioned engineer". When I think of it, we don't catch the idiom behind "old fashioned", I suspect. I think the stress is in _old_ in the sense of "old and dying" rather that _fashion_ which is recurring. I am not a linguist, but could it be buried in the language itself. In a German combined word, the final word is always the main one, which is also logical, because we hear it last!
About changing the history and physics books, I had to change my model of matter twice, from Dalton's atomic model to the particle model to the energy model. I would call it "often" because they were hard wired deeply. Anyway, rewriting history is a common thing, not because they get boring but people in power wish to warp them. Well, what was the real history to begin with?
