I want to use student groups to restrict access to assignments. However, the question is how to assign users to each of two groups. I have a thousand students but only want to deal with 150 of them for my course. It is a little too many to go through and manually choose which goes into which group.
I have an external system which will assign the students to groups but how can I get this information into Moodle (3.7.1)?
I tried uploading a file which contains the following (test system):
The idea was to enroll these students into course #2 with student role (5) and into one of the two groups.
In the data above, Larry and Suzi are already added to the course but Adam is not (this was part of the test, to see if I could enroll a student this way).
After I uploaded the data, choosing "Update existing users only" and "Existing users override with file" and every other setting was just the default (which was mainly, do not make any other changes). In the end there was no change. Adam was not added and nobody was assigned to any group.
I tried again without Adam (since Larry and Suzi were already enrolled in the course, this should remove any possible conflict with a non-enrolled user). Final result: Nothing is happening.
Am I doing something wrong here? Is this simply not the way to upload user data to get them assigned to groups? Is there a way to accomplish my goal?
