I am setting up a Moodle for my private piano instruction studio. I've always used as much technology as I could, especially since I teach quite a bit long distance (via Zoom). Up till now, I've used various separate technologies patchworked together for my custom needs. Moodle is my first serious attempt at a real LMS that unifies all solutions. I've never used it at all before, but I just installed 3.7.
I can tell that Moodle can do everything I need it to, but... I'm not sure exactly how to make it happen.
The first question I have is how to handle objectives. For instance: "The student will build an augmented triad on a given root note." That's just an example I'm using here.
In my current setup, I maintain a Google Sheet for each student that lists all course objectives. The objectives could be color-coded, to show progress. If I colored the background of the cell blue, that means "we're currently working on mastering this objective". If I colored it green, that meant the objective was mastered. The idea was, in my old website, that the Google Sheet was embedded for each student to view. They could watch over time as the whole thing turns green, and then they know... WOO HOO time to graduate to the next level!
I've searched the Moodle docs, and forums, for the appropriate way to show this information in a similar way (obviously I'm not stuck on color-coding, but anything that accomplishes a comparable result for the student is fine).
Does Moodle have a prescribed way to list objectives, to show which objectives an assignment targets (perhaps tagging activities with their objectives?), and also to track for students which objectives are/aren't already mastered?
I read the documentation on "competencies", and I think that might be what I'm after, but I can't tell for sure. It does sound similar. But, it would really help me to see what it looks like in action. If anyone can tell me confidently that "competency" is or isn't Moodlespeak for "objective", that would be very helpful. Also, if there's anywhere I can see someone using compentencies, or how someone else handles objectives, I'd be very grateful.
Of course, I realize there's probably a way to embed my Google Sheets into Moodle. If I need to, I'll do that. I was hoping that Moodle had this function built in.
