I wouldn't give up. You may have chosen the wrong path with a home NAS but you have learnt something.
I would use a Linux VPS which can be given a domain name. Always on, always available.
I am also a China based ESL teacher with some experience in running Moodle. If you are interested we may be able to pool resources.
