SCORM Version Update

SCORM Version Update

I work in an establishment which currently uses Moodle 3.5.

The following information was passed out to us:

SCORM 1.3 incompatibility.

In late 2020 SCORM will update to version 1.3. This version is built around the current SCORM 2004 and is therefore incompatible.

We are a bit confused by the above statement, we cannot find anything online about this update, has anyone else heard about this?

I'm not surprised you're confused - the statement you pasted above doesn't make any sense.

Prior to its release, SCORM 2004 was called SCORM 1.3, but the name "SCORM 1.3" is no longer in official use. Moodle does not provide full support for the SCORM 2004 specification (it's a massive spec and it didn't really get a lot of use.)

There's a good doc that explains the different SCORM versions here:
https://scorm.com/scorm-explained/business-of-scorm/scorm-versions/

There are some newer specs around like Xapi and CMI 5 but none of those have been as widely adopted as SCORM 1.2/2004 - In terms of Moodle I see a lot more people moving to H5P than the newer versions of the SCORM spec.

Can you give some more context on who provided this statement?

Thanks for the reply Dan,

That statement was sent out from the team that provides the support for the Learning Platform (Moodle) that we use in our training establishment.

Now we have some clarification that the statement is confusing, we make some enquires with the support team to find out what they are going on about.

Thanks again.

I wonder if they were confused about the Flash Apocalypse?

A lot of SCORM 1.2 content was created using Flash, and most browsers are planning to drop support for Flash so many of these older SCORM 1.2 packages will stop working.

For organisations that have lost access to the original source files for these old SCORM packages we usually highly recommend they investigate replacing them with H5P based packages instead of re-creating them again in SCORM. (do a search for SCORM Flash Apocalypse to find out a bit more)

But does Moodle support H5P, Dan?

Cheers!

In order to use H5P in Moodle, you need to install an external plugin:
https://moodle.org/plugins/mod_hvp

However, the Moodle community is working hard on integrating H5P in Moodle core. See more information about it here:

Please note that there is a new forum dedicated only to "H5P", so you can ask questions there:
