Quiz Activities Slow down the Platform

I'm running a Moodle 3.6.3+ instance on a Linux Debian server with 4Gb of RAM, 360GB of SSDS storage space. I'm using a Maria database.

The platform runs as sweet as anut in normal usage, but as soon as we start to make heavy use of a quiz activity for a test, then things start to slow down.

Any thoughts?

When things slow down, what is the bottleneck? Is it CPU or disk IO, and is it on the web servers or the database server? What are you using for caching?
