Does anyone have strategic advice for adding new questions to quizzes AFTER a course is in progress? I understand you can fix typos but what about introducing full revisions to question banks? As in adding 10 questions to an existing 20 questions. I'm in moodle 3.0 ... I would think this is common to many teachers needing to update questions due to curriculum updates, but when the learner has already taken some of the course how do you introduce a change like this? If I pull the old quiz how does that affect the students grade book and progress with badges etc? Seems like I could make a huge mess. Any strategy would be much appreciated.

If your quiz is picking 20 random questions from a question bank category (which might contain 40 questions, for example) you can add more questions to that category at any time, even after the quiz begin date has been met.

Once someone takes a quiz, some quiz changes are harder to make, but in many cases, you can modify the question. For example, if you determine that you have the wrong choice in a multiple-choice question, you can fix it, and then "regrade." Moodle's quiz engine is much more robust than other LMSs.

The best thing to do is to experiment on your own, with some bogus students created.

Rick, might I ask if it's possible to switch the bank the quiz is fed from entirely if the quiz is random? While I was playing around with the edit quiz in the admin block I saw that the questions couldn't be added or deleted BUT...

I have the option to "see questions" in an existing quiz, which then gives me the ability to see a drop down of banks. This got me thinking that in theory I could simply upload the questions in bulk via my GIFT format to a NEW BANK, and THEN re-assign the existing quiz which I cannot add or delete the number of questions from because its active, to be pulled from THAT NEW bank rather than the older bank. Is this possible?

If so, this is actually incredible and something I had not thought was possible, If that was possible then I technically could change every question simply by re-assigning a new bank. Let me know if this is an option. Thank you for your expertise on this

It is always best to practice what you think you want to do on your own since you know exactly what you might want to do. Set up some bogus users, and a bogus quiz. Use multiple browsers where you are logged in as admin in one browser, and as the students in the other browsers.

I think that if you quiz is picking questions randomly from a question bank category, that while the quiz is "open" you can still add more questions by putting these new questions into the same question bank category, or maybe even a sub-category. Removing questions could be trickier since you have to assure that you are not trying to pick 20 questions from a question bank that now only has 15. I think that you should be fine as long as your question bank always has more questions than what you need for the quiz.

Practice will make perfect. You really want to be sure that you know for sure.

Also, consider designing your question banks before giving the exam, and test it.

No, I don't think that you can reassign a test bank. But by moving questions around, you might be able to achieve the same thing.

Hi Rick,

I have the same problem as Billy but need the questions to go in a certain order so can't use random questions. Is there a way to achieve this functionality without random questions?

I've been told this is how question banks work by default but I cannot get it to work.
