There's a way to send a message to students that didn't turn in an assignment. There really is... but it's terrible to use and hard to find.

For those who are looking for it, these are the steps:

  1. Go to course administration
  2. Go to reports
  3. Go to course participation report
  4. Select the right activity module
  5. Select the right role (student)
  6. Select the right action (Post)
  7. Sort columns on Post
  8. Manually tick all the boxes for students that did not post
  9. Select in the bottom 'with selected students 'send a message'.

These are just 9 ridiculous steps, but it works. I'm just embarrassed every time I have to explain these steps to a teacher who just wants to remind his students to turn in the assignment...

There is a very good solution for this from a user's perspective. What if... you would go to the assignment itself, select the filter 'not submitted', select all students and then be able to send them a message? Would that not be a very, very logical thing to do?

Alternatively the Reengagement plugin may assist with this issue.

This plugin automates reminder notices for student activities.

We do use it, but I find it very difficult to set up. It has to do with the text used to explain which option does what. I have several teachers using it but they all tell me that they do not understand the helptext that is being given. This might also have to do with teachers that only have basic English knowledge.

If you want, I could help you try to explain the options more clearly so the help provided to set the reengagement module up is more easy?
