I've been at this for hours! I can't get the 'Reply' to show up in forum in student view. It does show up in Teacher view. I checked the forum documentation as well as the FAQs and tried to change permissions and roles for all the students but the 'Reply' in forum still won't show up. The only response available to students in forum is 'PermaLink.'
Are you using the Announcements forum, the default one at the top of a new course? Or are you using separate groups in a forum? Please see the Forum FAQ question 4 Why are students unable to post in a forum? for suggestions.
I found and read the Forum FAQ before I posted. I am using the Forum that shows up under course topics when you select add an activity or resource. I I've left the Announcement forum at the top of the class empty.
Which type of forum is it? (See screenshot) and do you have groups in your course? And when you say "student view" do you mean, when an actual student sees it, or you are using a student account, or do you mean you have used the "switch role to student" function?
If you create a Q&A forum object with Group mode set to Separate Groups but aren't using grouped users, the missing 'reply' link issue will occur as outlined in the Forum FAQ and here.
If you switch the group mode back to no groups for the course and you're not using grouped students, the 'reply' link will be missing still from the Q&A forum. The issue appears to be in the actual question in that forum. The question itself retains a setting for observing group mode that you can't change to no groups. As a result, student role users still can't see the 'reply' link.
It's easy to fix by creating a new forum question with the same content (i.e. a new prompt question) as it won't have that Group setting available to cause the problem. Of course, if a forum has a bunch of content that might be more difficult, but with new forums it's not an issue.
I might be missing something here, of course, but posted in case it's helpful to anyone else who just spent an hour scratching their head.
