Repositories across different sites using aliases

Hi,

I have a live site and a test version of the same site, I am having an issue with backing up courses and restoring them on the live site, where I have used repository images with an alias. The images no longer appear visible when I restore, I do also get a warning about these images when backing up. I was wondering if there is a way that I can add the same repository to both sites with the same settings and there be a way for moodle to back up from one site and pick up the link when placed on the new site?

When creating a backup, what does the warning say ... specifically ...

This:

"File references to external contents are included in the backup file. These won't work if the backup is restored on a different site."

Are your test site and production on the same physical server where moodledata's for both sites can be seen by somthing like a file browser or ssh shell?

Hi Ken,

Yes that was the message I was receiving, the two sites I am running are on a shared server hosted by heart internet, however each domain is only accessible through its own login.

Was wondering if there was any other solution to this, or will I have to change all my images to copy versions so that I can back them up.

Issues with doing other things that would facilitate what you want to do center around 'shared host' and lack of access to commands from ssh to enable such ability.

So am going to say 'yes' to you changing the links to images from aliases to the 'other' way. The files then would be included in backups.

Ok, that makes sense, just is a shame you can't use this function across different sites, as the repository-alias method is very useful. I assume there is no coding that can be done in the backend to tell the copied images to take the file path of the alternative site, if they are in a similar file structure, but just with the website name changed?

Again ... shared host ... got ssh? Know how to program? Know what to change to get desired results? Is it wise to hack core code? No responses necessary ... those are 'food for thought' questions.

Also ... think about it a minute ... the backup routine cannot do Vulcan Mind Melds with the user executing the backups. Thus the backup file created by that routine is going to do it's thing in a safe/secure manner - now I don't have Vulcan Mind Meld with programmers, so that's a guess.

Moodle hasn't reached the AI stage yet.

And, now that you are experiencing this, does it change your mind about using 'aliases'?
