The difference in may case is I need the path to work and not be dependent on the ServerName because one of the key pages in the path is my healthcheck page which the ELB in AWS will be hitting without any server name context.
In the above example he defines the alias in the virtual host config. I suppose the virtual host could be defined to listen on all IPs.
I may also try a different port to keep the site separate from the default site defined in server config.
Putting these improvements in backlog for now since it is working as is for now.
