We need to install a plugin and just before take a backup of Moodle code and DB

Really would like to put this into maintenance mode before we do this, but we have 189 users online

Any ideas

Thanks

Put an alert on the screen telling them when the backup will happen and to log out before then.

You could use Site administration > Users > Bulk user actions to send a message to all your users, notifying them of the impending Maintenance and downtime.

If they use an external service to authenticate, you could temporarily disable that, so your users don't log in while you're running your back up and update processes (just don't forget to re-enable the authentication plugin after you're done).

It's recommended to perform this kind of maintenance outside office hours, so it doesn't impact your organisation.

If you think about it, regardless of what you do you need to "pull the plug" at some point.

The 'trick' is good communications in advance. This is always a problem ("I never saw the email") but probably depends on your particular situation.

Maybe you can also use scheduled maintenance mode  if you have CLI maintenance - see Maintenance mode documentation

Excellent suggestions. I am interested in the CLI scheduled maintenance but will have to look into it

Is this on the KEMP load balanced setup that used to be referred in your profile? or any load balanced setup?
