Moodle 3.3.1 - Cannot Add/Edit Activities or Course Categories. Edit links and Gear Icons are greyed out.

Hi There,

We are using Moodle 3.3.1 and PHP 5.6.27 until yesterday we performed an upgrade to PHP 7.1 which seemed to work fine.


Yesterday we also started to Manage Courses and Categories for our upcoming school year:


1. We added a new subcategory to archive 3 of last year's courses

2. Changed the names of the old courses (ie: from "Spanish 5" to "Spanish 5_2017-2018")

3. Added 3 new empty courses for this upcoming year (gave them the same name as the course last year ie: Spanish 5)

4. Then we imported the content from the old courses into the new courses to be used this year.


Now, throughout the whole site, all "Edit" links and gear icons are greyed out.  We are not able to add or edit activities:



We cannot edit or delete course categories:




And we cannot change Course Settings under Course Administration -> Edit Settings.  The "Course Summary Files" box will not load and we cannot expand any settings categories (ie: Course Format or Appearance):




At first, we thought that it may have been the PHP upgrade that caused the problem so we reverted back to PHP 5.6.27 but the problem persists.  We purged all caches and deleted the new courses that we added.  The difficulty is that we are not sure if the problem is related to the PHP upgrade or the adding and importing of the new courses.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

That looks like a non-core theme. What happens if you switch to Boost?

Hi Howard, thanks for your reply.

Yes, I forgot to mention that it is the Adaptable theme.  

When we switch to Boost, its still the same problem except that the "Edit" links (next to each activity) are not greyed out on the course mainpage.  In Adaptable, if I click into an activity, I can get to the "Edit Settings" page that way.  In either case, once on the Edit Settings page, the menus won't expand and the Additional Files box just keeps trying to load but never does.  We have tried Chrome and Firefox as well as with several different users.  No luck so far but we're trying!  smile

Switch on your browser's Javascript Console (e.g. in Chrome View > Developer > JavsScript console). 

Refresh the offending page. Any (red) errors in the console?

Yes, turns out we have some errors on every page.  We can still add and edit users and view activities...we just can't change any settings in courses or activities.


I can also send you a screenshot of the errors on a Course Admin -> Edit Settings page of you like.  If you see anything there that gives you any clues, we would be glad to hear it!  Thanks.
