Search - 3.4 vs 3.5

In attempting to help a poster in these forums, it was pointed out that in 3.5 there was simplesearch added as an option to solr search.

No problems there, but ... now am struggling to understand ...

3.4
Bug fixes for general core bugs in 3.4.x will end 12 November 2018 (12 months).
Bug fixes for security issues in 3.4.x will end 13 May 2019 (18 months).

It is Aug of 2018.

While solr does work, it is a bear to configure ... while some have been successful, that hasn't been in a 'straight forward' manner ... at least not with CentOS 7.

3.4 has only one option for search ... solr

3.5 now has search engine options of solr + simplesearch

Does this mean, simplesearch will NOT be 'back ported' (believe that's the term) to 3.4?
Is simplesearch not considered to be a 'code fix'?

Thanks, in advance for removing the 'haze'!

Hi Ken,

Simplesearch plugin was a new feature in 3.5. We don't backport improvements nor new features to stable branches.

You could try to copy search/engine/simplesearch to a 3.4 test site and see if it works, although I would not recommend using it for production until it passed extensive testing before. (it is not an officially supported in 3.4)

Thanks for response, David.   See someone has already rated your response 'useful' so that's one 'vote' for 'moving forward'.  Yes, was thinking about trying to manually/cheat 'backport' ... might give it a go ... on a sandbox instance and test, of course.
