I think I understand most of the notifications setting, but this one beats me. How can I get a web notification when I'm not logged in to Moodle?

Yes, I’m confused too.  my students and staff never log out, they just close their web browser so I don’t know if “offline” mean ‘not actively online’ or if it means between a log out and a log in. Do the docs say anything about this?

Found it:

  • Online: User has been active on the site within the last 5 minutes.

  • Offline: User has been inactive on the site for at least 5 minutes.

So I’m assuming then the answer to your question is this:

If you’ve been “offline” for over 5 minutes, you’d rather have an email notification of the event, instead of coming back to moodle the next day and getting a pop up alert of that notification.

Also if you’re online, your probably rather have the notification try alert you and not have email duplicate of these same alerts going to your inbox while you’re considered “online”
