I would have thought absolute links were only useful for ex-Moodle materials, i.e. any online materials and sites that are not a Moodle Resource or Activity. That's how I would read the OP and would advise there is no problem whatsoever with using such links from inside Moodle. The backup or even site migration will not interfere with the addresses of external sites.
