I was initially told that I could not modify the theme, but I pointed out that the theme is based on a cascading style sheet -- but with the warning that I am just starting to learn CSS and XHTML.
Thanks for making the point that, ideally, the custom theme itself should be upgraded for Moodle 1.5.X.
I knew that I needed direct access the style sheet in order to make any changes, but as a neophyte to CSS, I would no doubt do more damage than good. (I have been hand-coding HTML since 1994, but much has changed in twelve years!)
Unfortunately, although I am using the administrative account to access the Moodle site, I have not been granted access to the themes folder, and I have not requested such access, given the potential for damage.
I have notified the IT staff of the information in your helpful message, Helen, but I seriously doubt that the custom theme will be upgraded (from Moodle 1.4.X compliance to Moodle 1.5.X compliance). In fact, I am certain that the theme will not be upgraded, unless it interferes with the functionality of the Moodle site.
I hope that as we (I) gain more experience with Moodle (and XHTML/CSS) that I can, and will be allowed to, take on issues such as this one. I have been given permission to experiment as much as I want, which I accept as a compliment, but the original PEARL/Moodle site content is basically on the new upgraded Moodle 1.5.3 site, so I have been conservative in what I have done.
At this point, all I can do is what I am able to do and to try to learn as much about Moodle as possible. I am working with a great team, but Moodle is new to us all, particularly to me.
