A nasty hour and i am glad I back up my site- just have to do it more often!
I fiddled with the default-ssl.conf and 000.default.conf as these pointed to the Moodle subdirectory. I managed to get a info.php displayed so Apache was working. Changed them back to the Moodle folder and all was fine.
No idea what happened, I think Apache was out for a while - even though it told me it was running.
