Issue - Moodle server version check

Hello fellow Moodlers!

I'm having an issue with my Moodle installation. I have been running version 2.9.9 for the past couple of months on my Synology DS216play for several of the classes I teach. I've been trying to avoid updating past 2.9.9 since several of the question type plugins that I use have not yet been upgraded to be compatible.

My Synology was inadvertently set to auto-update its ''packages'' and so it downloaded and installed version 3.4.1 and now I am being prompted to with:

3.4.1+ (Build: 20180118) (2017111301.01)

Once you do this you can not go back again. Please note that this process can take a long time.

While I would prefer not to update, I can't see anyway around it (suggestions welcome) since I and my students have completely lost access to our Moodle.

When I try to upgrade to the new version I'm given the error:

version 3.0 is required and you are running 2.9.9+ (Build: 20161129)

I've tried moving my current web/moodle and reinstalling 2.9.9 in the same place, but I get an error that my databases were created with a more recent version of the software.

I've also tried installing 3.0 and 3.4.1 in my web/moodle folder but I continue to get the error in the attached file.

Can anyone advise me on what I'm missing? Be it a step to sucessfully upgrade the database to 3.4.1 or (preferably) a way to recover my 2.9.9 installation?

You need to restore a package of the database from prior to the upgrade.

It sounds like you have tried to run the upgrade without first upgrading to the interim version (3.0) that is needed and so now you have problems. The database thinks it is on 3.4 but you needed to go to 3.0 first.

Though I am very surprised that Moodle allowed the upgrade to start as it is. Actually from your description it doesn't. So, when you try the latest 3.0 version you get this same message? How are you actually doing these upgrades? Are you actually downloading the code from moodle.org to replace your moodle folder with and then copying over your config.php file and plugins?

Hi Emma,

What does "restore a package of the database" mean?

I think that what happened was that the server tried to update the moodle code without doing it through the moodle which is why it might have let it happen?

When I'm attempting to do the upgrade so that I can once again access my Moodle I rename the moodle folder and put a new "moodle" folder in its place. I then copy over the config.php file so that it knows where on my server to look for things and then when I try to get access the moodle it gives me the same message as when I try to perform the upgrade with the old folder.

The server cannot upgrade moodle by itself unless you have some strange 3rd party installer.

If you change the moodle version folder to 3.0, you should not be getting that message - what message are you getting when you use the 3.0 code?

Moodle has three parts, code (moodle folder), content (moodledata folder) and database. Before any upgrade, you should back up all three.
