Non-graded assignments

Hi,

I had one of my teachers contact me in a panic yesterday because she had uploaded feedback to her students but because she had made the assignment non-graded, the students couldn't see the assignment listed in their gradebooks, and were therefore unable to collect her feedback.

Looking through the assignment instructions on-line, I can find nothing that explains how this feature is actually supposed to work.

Does anyone have any thoughts on it? I know from previous threads on this that there was a lot of discussion about whether it should feature in the gradebook, but surely, an assignment is an assignment graded or not. There should be some way that it is listed in a course summary for students work so that they can go there and see whatever comments have been made and that summary of work is logically the gradebook: no?

Whilst I agree that you may not want all assignments to appear in your gradebook, I would also suggest that there are times when you would want an ungraded assignment to actually appear there.

For example: you create an assignment where you only want to supply feedback to the students. They upload a file, you give the feedback via a file, but how do they now get hold of the feedback files? The normal way would be to go to the gradebook, find the assignment, click on it and then scoll down until you find the section with the teacher's feedback file.

If the assignment does not show up in the gradebook, the student has to go to the assignment in the course, and here it simply shows up as pending.

I think this one needs some thought. wink

Paul,

I am not sure what version Moodle you are using, but we are using version 3.3+ and assignments show in the gradebook if grade is set to none and feedback comments is selected. Students can see the feedback in their user report. I tested this on the Moodle Sandbox which is using 3.4+ at:

https://demo.moodle.net/

It worked there as well. Feedback files alone was not enough to have it show in the gradebook, I am guessing because the feedback files do not show in the gradebook. So, to have the assignment show in the gradebook, make sure feedback comments is selected. The students will need to go into the assignment to see the feedback file.
