I have the same situation. We have about 4000 students in around 100 groups. Just wonder if there is a limit of maximum groups within one course? and a limit of maximum students in one group? Thanks

No to group limits and a limit of students within the course. What will interfere is only if your server will endure and not stay slow with everyone's access at the same time. The report I have of my courses is always 10% of the total number of students of a course, logging in at the same time. Check Google Analytics and pass it to your IT staff.
