Thank you very much for your reply.  I found that by creating a table that contains all pertinent student and related course data, that I was able to successfully create a student and enroll them in a course.

It was a very straight forward process and the documentation was very good.

I have one additional question that I think I know the answer to, however I am hoping that perhaps there is a way around it.

Is it possible for an student that is externally enrolled through the database can setup a course expiration similar to a manual enrollment?

For example use a course setup to be used for manual enrollment to expire in 30 days is also enrolled through the external database process and all users, regardless of their enrollment method would expire in the 30 days identified. 

From what I can see, I would have to run a cron job every day and suspend the manually  enrolled users.  This is less desirable as I would also have to manage courses of variable expiry dates (and related emails).

If you know a better way, it would be greatly appreciated.
