I am trying to hide all content in a section by using the stealth activities function, but I have been informed by our Moodle host that the option to make content available cannot be used with labels. We are using labels to embed video content so we really want to be able to apply this to all content in a topic, as it is linked to from another place in the course (the course used to use the orphaned activities feature to achieve this).
Does anyone know another workaround to hide a section, but allow all content to be linked to and viewed by students?
The videos are on the page - they are just in a section that I want to hide until the student selects a link from another place in the course. It is a way of stopping the course looking too cluttered in the student view. This was possible when using orphaned activities in previous versions of Moodle.
Thank you for your suggestions, but I am very familiar with different course formats and layouts. Unfortunately the introduction of stealth activities as a replacement for orphaned activities means that a course which existed and worked very well in an older version of Moodle will now have to be redesigned to achieve the same look and feel. I was hoping that a developer might pick up on this one...
Just had a quick look back in Moodle 3.1 and made a label in an orphaned section and could not get a link for it, so I don't understand Beverley how you were able to originally link to a label from another place in the first instance before the upgrade. Please could you explain the sequence of events that were employed to orchestrate the solution on the old version. Then we could understand the nature of the situation exactly, replicate and then see how a change in the Moodle core functionality may have affected that solution process.
In our previous Moodle (version 3.0.4) and prior to that, we relied on the ability to reduce sections and use the orphaned activities feature to limit the amount of content seen on a page.
I have attached screen shots to illustrate.
As mentioned in my previous reply, we have a large course which has been designed in a previous version of Moodle and now does not work in the same way due to this upgrade. I was wondering why the ability to orphan topics has been removed, when the replacement doesn't seem to provide the same functionality.
Hoping that my question now makes sense!
I actually think it is related to the fact that they also removed the ability to set the number of sections at the course setting level. We can now add as many sections as we want but we cannot delete them without individually deleting each section. This also removed the ability to orphan a section. It is always annoying when we lose some functionality but I guess a lot has changed along the way and eventually worked out. I would suggest putting in a tracker ticket maybe but I am pretty sure it will not get a high priority because I think this is a pretty rare use case. Putting videos in labels has been unnecessary for some time now as you can set them to show right on the course page without using a label.
I think the loss of control of the number of sections is a big problem and a backwards step. Anyone who wants to rectify this issue should see the tracker related to this and consider voting for the facility to bulk remove blank topic sections:
